A House is a Home

Home is a place close to everyone's heart, it's where many find the nexus of the family's soul. I've had many places that I've called home and it hasn't always been in the form of four walls and a roof. A shared flat that had more people than beds, rented properties through the ages and even a caravan which encourages social interaction and shared meals.
An apartment shared between two adults and two children are not uncommon these days, or living in a space that you can swing a cat, but has not urban space to grow flowers and plants to let the animal go outside, and children share bunk beds because growing up with your own bedroom is a thing of the past.
Not everyone lives in a house but when you ask a child to draw a house it's often represented by a square for the base and triangle for the roof. Two common shapes they can easily draw and universally recognised in cultural environments.
When you ask children what they think a house should look like, they take inspiration from within their community, such as houses found in the main street, places walked past on their way to school or buildings on a larger scale.
A child may get inspiration from houses, or should I say palaces, of the grand scale found in their favourite storybook, tv show or movie. From my childhood days I always thought that when you are found by a prince then of you go to their forever home.
These houses were made with walls and roof as it was discovered that you do need a solid foundation in order for the structure to be supported and weight distributed evenly. Once this was achieved then individual details were included, such as windows, doorways or imprints.
None of these houses represented where the creator lived but each still heart and soul because of the love used to create them.

This song by Ben Harper is a beautiful dedication to a home.
Even when the grass is overgrown in the yard
Even when the dog is too old to bark
And when you're sitting at the table trying not to starve
A house is a home even when there's ghosts
Even when you gotta run from the ones who love you most
Screen door's broken paint's peeling from the wood
Locals whisper when they gonna leave the neighbourhood
A house is a home where the chores are never done
Where you spend your whole life running to and from
And if the life that you live is not the life you choose
Make your child a home and start anew
A house is a home
Even when we've up and gone
Even when you're there alone
A house is a home
